In May 1910, Mrs Alice Bentley and Mrs Chambers formed the Western Suburbs Ladies Rowing Club. The club was located at Kemps Boatshed at Abbotsford and was the only amateur women's rowing club in New South Wales. In 1925 the club changed its name to Sydney Ladies Rowing Club and over the course of 35 years the club changed boat sheds three times and changed its name to Sydney Women's Rowing Club. The club moved to its present site in Abbotsford in 1960. MLC School joined the club in 1997 and men were allowed to become members the following year.
Except for the years of World War 2, the club has been continually providing boats to competitive and social rowers. Throughout the years, the club has produced many fine female rowers who have competed at Australian and World Championships.
